Sow masoor (lentil) in UP from late October to mid November for best yield, using conserved moisture in rainfed Bundelkhand fields. Good varieties include IPL 316, IPL 220 (Shri Mahalakshmi), HUL 57, DPL 62 (Sheri) and PL 8. Seed rate is about 30 to 40 kg per hectare for normal sowing with 30 cm row spacing; for late or utera (paira) sowing in rice fields, use a higher seed rate. Treat seed with fungicide and Rhizobium plus PSB. Masoor is hardy and needs little or no irrigation in many areas, but one irrigation at flowering or pod filling helps where water is available. Confirm the latest recommended varieties with your KVK.

In Bundelkhand we often do utera sowing, broadcasting masoor into the standing paddy a few days before rice harvest so it uses the residual moisture. The trick is to time it right and raise the seed rate, because germination on the surface is patchy. It saves a tillage and a sowing operation on hard drying land.

Do not sow masoor too late here. My November end sown crop flowered into the cold and then ran into heat at pod filling, and yield dropped. Late October to early November gave me the best fill, and a single irrigation at flowering helped a lot in the dry year.
