Will I get a price premium for natural farming produce without certification?

I farm naturally but cannot afford or arrange certification yet. Can I still get a better price, and how do buyers trust uncertified produce?

Without any recognised certification it is hard to get a guaranteed premium in the open mandi, because buyers cannot verify your claim. Your realistic options are direct trust based selling and group certification. Selling directly to local consumers, residents associations, organic stores or through farmer markets lets buyers who know you pay more for chemical free produce. For wider markets, the low cost route is PGS India group certification through a local farmer group, which is cheaper than third party NPOP certification and builds buyer trust. Building a small loyal customer base and being transparent about your practices is often the most practical path for a small farmer. For export or large organic retail you will eventually need formal certification, so plan for PGS or NPOP as you grow.

I sell directly to families in town who visit my farm and trust how I grow. They happily pay more. For the mandi it makes no difference without a certificate, so I focus on direct sales.

We joined a local PGS group, which is far cheaper than NPOP and gave us a recognised organic claim for selling within India. For our domestic sales it was enough to earn a better price. If you ever want to export you will need formal certification, so plan for that later.
