My feed cost feels too high for the weight my broilers reach. People mention FCR. What is it and how do I improve it?

FCR, the feed conversion ratio, is the amount of feed used to produce one unit of body weight, so a lower FCR means the bird turns feed into meat more efficiently and your cost per bird is lower. Since feed is the biggest cost in broiler farming, even small improvements in FCR add up. To improve it, use good quality balanced stage feeds, avoid feed wastage with proper feeders and correct feeder height, and give clean water at all times since water intake drives feed intake. Keep the shed at a comfortable temperature with good ventilation, because heat stress and high ammonia hurt growth, and follow the vaccination and disease control plan so birds are not fighting illness. Healthy, comfortable birds on good feed and clean water give the best FCR.

Reducing feed wastage helped my FCR more than I expected. I fixed feeder height and stopped overfilling, and ventilation in summer made a real difference too.

Healthy birds convert feed best. Whenever a disease scare passes through and the birds eat but do not grow, my FCR goes bad that batch. Sticking to the vaccination plan and keeping the litter dry to avoid leg and gut problems is part of feed efficiency, not separate from it.

Water quality is underrated. When my water line got dirty the birds drank less, ate less and grew slow. Cleaning the drinkers daily and keeping cool clean water available pushed up both intake and weight. Heat stress in summer also wrecks FCR, so I added fans for the hot weeks.
