How do I check if my urea or DAP is genuine and not adulterated?

Simple field checks for fertiliser quality, urea and DAP authenticity tests, buy on PoS bill.

There are simple field checks, though they are only rough indicators, not lab proof. Genuine urea is white, uniform, near round prills that dissolve fully in water leaving no residue, and a small amount placed on a hot pan should melt and leave little or no solid. Genuine DAP granules are hard, brownish, and do not break easily under nail pressure; if you warm DAP granules with a little crushed lime they give off a sharp ammonia smell. The most reliable protection is to buy only against an Aadhaar authenticated PoS bill from a licensed dealer at printed MRP and keep the bill, since billing creates a traceable record. If you suspect adulteration, report it with the bill to the District Agriculture Officer or fertiliser inspector. When in doubt, confirm with your KVK.

The DAP nail test is handy. Real DAP granules are hard and do not crush easily under your nail, while a fake soft lot crumbled to powder for me. The ammonia smell when warmed with lime is another quick check I do at the shop before paying.

Always insist on the proper PoS bill at MRP. A dealer once tried to sell me unbilled bags cheap and that is exactly where the adulterated stuff hides. With the bill you have proof and a record. The few rupees you save buying off the books are not worth a ruined crop.
