Farm pond size depends on your rainfall, catchment area, soil, and how much supplemental or protective irrigation you want, so there is no single figure; it is sized from your runoff and crop water need, often with help from the agriculture or watershed department. A pond mainly gives a few protective irrigations during dry spells rather than full season irrigation for field crops. Seepage and evaporation are real losses: in light, porous soils unlined ponds can lose a lot to seepage, so an HDPE or LDPE lining is used to hold water, while clayey soils may hold reasonably without lining. Reduce evaporation by keeping the pond deeper and narrower. Many states give subsidy for farm ponds and lining. Get the size and lining decision from your KVK or watershed office.
My lined farm pond gave two life saving irrigations to soybean in a dry August. Without the HDPE lining our sandy soil would have drunk it all.
Apply for the subsidy before you start digging, not after. I built mine first and then found out the scheme needed prior approval and a sanctioned design, so I missed the help. The agriculture office guided the size based on my catchment too, which I would have got wrong on my own.
