To get a Soil Health Card, contact your block or district agriculture office or the local KVK and ask for soil sampling under the scheme; in many areas field staff collect samples on a cycle, or you can submit your own correctly drawn sample. Take a composite sample from several spots in the field at root-zone depth, mix well, take about half a kg, label it with your name, survey number and field details, and hand it to the soil testing lab through the agriculture office. The lab tests pH, organic carbon and major and micro nutrients and issues the card with crop-wise fertiliser recommendations. The report typically takes a few weeks; collect it from the office or check the soil health card portal with your details.

Maine apne block ke krishi vibhag se mitti sample dene ko bola, unke field staff ne aa ke sample liya. Report aane me kuch hafte lage. Card me crop wise khaad ki salah likhi thi jo bahut kaam aayi.

After I submitted my sample I kept the slip with the sample number, and that turned out to be important when I went to collect the card. Without it the office could not quickly find my report. Ask for an acknowledgement with the sample or registration number when you hand over the soil.

If you draw your own sample, the common mistake is taking soil from only one spot or from the top surface. The KVK taught me to take a composite from several spots at root-zone depth, mix it well and take about half a kg. A bad sample gives a useless report, so do this part carefully.

One tip from the KVK: collect the sample when the field is not freshly fertilised or waterlogged, because that distorts the reading. Wait a while after fertiliser application before sampling. They also told me to avoid spots near the bund, compost heap or path, since those give a false picture of the field.

Label the sample clearly with your name, survey number and field details before handing it over, otherwise the report can get mixed up. I also noted down the date I submitted it so I could follow up at the office. After a few weeks I collected the card from the same office; some states let you download it from the portal too.
