A non-loanee farmer (no crop loan) can enrol in PMFBY through a bank branch, a CSC, an authorised insurance agent, or directly on the PMFBY portal. Carry your Aadhaar, a bank passbook for the account where claims should come, land records such as khasra or 7/12, and the sowing certificate or self-declaration of the crop sown. The provider records your crop, area and the village, calculates your premium share, and gives you a receipt or policy acknowledgement. Apply before the season enrolment deadline, because late applications are not accepted. Save your application number; you will need it to check status and to file any claim later.

One pitfall is leaving it to the last day. The portal and CSCs get very crowded near the deadline and some farmers miss enrolment. I applied a week early and had no rush. Late applications are simply not accepted, so do not wait.

Make sure the crop and area you declare match what you have actually sown, because a wrong declaration can cause your claim to be rejected later. I carried a sowing certificate from the patwari along with my 7/12 to be safe. The CSC operator entered the village details from the land record itself.
