For spray or loose flower chrysanthemum you want many flowers, so pinch the growing tip once the plant is established to make it branch into several shoots, each carrying many small blooms, which suits loose flower and garland sale. For large standard single blooms you do the opposite, keep one main stem and disbud, that is remove the side buds and keep only the top central bud per stem so all the plant's energy goes into one big flower for the bouquet trade. Pinching multiplies flower number while disbudding increases individual flower size. Decide based on whether you sell loose by weight or as graded cut stems. Support the plants and confirm the variety type, spray or standard, with your supplier as varieties are bred for one purpose.

For the temple and garland market I pinch and let it bush out for many small flowers. The big single blooms need disbudding and more care, only worth it if a bouquet buyer pays for size.

Pick the right variety first, this is the part people miss. The spray types are bred for many flowers and the standard types for big single blooms. I tried to disbud a spray variety once and it just did not give a proper big flower.

If you disbud for big blooms, support each stem, the heavy single flower bends a weak stem and the spike is wasted. I stake the standard type rows. For the loose garland market I do not bother, I just pinch and let it bush.
