Most apples and high-chill pears need cold winters, but certain low-chill pear types grow well in the plains and lower hills, with the hardy soft pear types and Patharnakh (a hard sandy pear) being popular in Punjab and nearby areas. These tolerate the warmer winters of the plains, are vigorous, and crop reliably, while the European soft pears need more chilling and suit the hills. Plant grafted plants of a recommended low-chill type, give wide enough spacing for the vigorous canopy, and train and prune to keep the tree open and productive. Cross-pollination between compatible varieties improves fruit set. For the right variety and spacing for your district, confirm with Punjab Agricultural University extension or your local KVK.

Patharnakh did well for us in the plains where apple is impossible. It is hardy and crops every year, just keep the canopy open with pruning.

We planted a second compatible variety alongside our Patharnakh for cross-pollination and the fruit set improved over the single-variety patch. A pollinizer that flowers at the same time is the key, otherwise it does not help. The university extension guided us on which variety to pair, so ask before you plant a single-variety block.

The trees are vigorous in our Amritsar conditions, so we gave wide spacing and still have to prune to keep them open, or the inside goes bare and shaded. Patharnakh is a hard crisp pear, good for the local fresh market and it stores and travels well, while the soft pears bruise easily. Pick the type to match where you will sell, the hard pear suits long-distance markets better.

Plant a compatible pollinizer that flowers at the same time as Patharnakh, because our single-variety patch set poorly until we interplanted a second variety. A pollinizer flowering at a different time does not help at all. The university extension told us which variety to pair, so ask before planting a single block.
