NABARD is the apex development bank for agriculture and rural areas, and it mostly works through banks rather than lending to you directly. It refinances cooperative banks, regional rural banks and commercial banks so they can give you crop loans, term loans for dairy, irrigation, farm machinery and allied activities. NABARD promotes and grades SHGs and supports the FPO ecosystem with grants and producer organisation development funds. It finances rural infrastructure like warehouses, cold storage, rural roads and irrigation through dedicated funds, and runs schemes for watershed development and tribal areas. For an individual farmer or group, you usually access NABARD support by applying through your bank or through a NABARD supported agency, so ask your branch which NABARD linked scheme fits dairy, godown or processing plans. Confirm current scheme details with your bank or the district development manager.

Our SHG was supported by NABARD through the bank, that bank linkage gave us our first loan. Many think NABARD lends directly, it does not for small farmers, it works behind the banks. Ask your branch manager to point you to the right NABARD scheme.

I built a small godown with a bank loan that had NABARD refinance behind it. The district development manager of NABARD guided me on the right scheme. Worth meeting that officer if you plan storage or a processing unit.

NABARD ran a financial literacy and SHG training camp in our block that was free, that is how our group got formed and graded. They focus a lot on women groups. Attend their camps if you hear of one, the contacts you make there help when you need a loan later.

For my dairy I used the NABARD linked term loan through a cooperative bank, the repayment was set to match milk income which suited me. Ask the bank to design the repayment around your cash flow. The district development manager is the right person to meet for any allied activity plan.

We approached NABARD support for cold storage through our FPO and the producer organisation development fund helped with handholding. It is a long process with paperwork, be patient and complete the documents fully. Do not expect direct cash, it comes as credit and grant support via agencies.
