A Krishi Vigyan Kendra is your district level farm science centre and it offers free or low cost help across many areas. KVKs run training programmes on improved varieties, pest and nutrient management, natural and organic farming, dairy, mushroom, beekeeping and food processing. They conduct frontline demonstrations and on farm trials so you can see new practices working in real fields. They also do soil testing, advise on seed and variety selection, support FPO and SHG groups, and host model demonstration farms including for natural farming. Many KVKs send advisories through mobile messages and weather based crop advice. Visit your district KVK, meet the subject matter specialists, and ask to be added to their farmer contact list and training calendar. There is usually one KVK per district under the ICAR system.

My KVK soil test showed my field needed less urea than I was using. That alone saved money. They also gave me a better groundnut variety on demonstration. Just walk in and ask, the scientists are helpful if you go with specific questions.

I learnt mushroom growing in a KVK training and now sell to local hotels as side income. They gave hands on practice, not just lecture. Get on their phone list so you hear about upcoming free trainings before seats fill up.
