Zinc deficiency shows as khaira disease in paddy: bronzing and brown patches on lower leaves, stunted growth, and delayed tillering. The standard correction is soil application of zinc sulphate; for a confirmed deficiency apply about 10 kg per acre of zinc sulphate heptahydrate (21%) or about 6.5 kg per acre of the monohydrate (33%), mixed with dry soil or sand and broadcast at puddling or before sowing. For a quick fix in standing crop, foliar spray 0.5% zinc sulphate (about 5 g per litre) with half that quantity of lime to avoid leaf scorch, 1 to 2 sprays. Soil zinc applied once usually lasts 2 to 3 crops. Confirm the dose against your Soil Health Card.
Khaira hit my nursery badly one year. Foliar zinc sulphate with lime fixed the standing crop within 10 days, then I added soil zinc next season.
Do not skip the lime in the foliar mix. I sprayed plain zinc sulphate at too strong a strength once and got leaf burn. Adding the lime and keeping to the recommended dilution avoided that.
Zinc deficiency is worse in fields that stay flooded and in high-pH soils, so my low patch always shows khaira first. Mixing the soil zinc with FYM before broadcasting helped spread it evenly across the plot.
Don't confuse khaira with iron or nitrogen problems. Zinc shows as rusty brown patches starting on the middle and lower leaves, while nitrogen yellows the oldest leaves first. Getting it right saved me from spraying the wrong thing, but always cross-check the dose with your Soil Health Card and KVK.
