A Lakhpati Didi is a Self Help Group woman who consistently earns 1 lakh rupees or more in a year, and the scheme runs under DAY-NRLM through your State Rural Livelihood Mission. To qualify you must be an active member of an SHG, then your group helps you take up an income activity like dairy, tailoring, vegetable selling, food processing or a small shop. The mission supports you with skill training, bank credit linkage, and market connection. SHGs can access collateral free loans, and for loans up to 3 lakh the interest is subsidised to around 7 percent per year. Start by talking to your SHG and the village level CRP or community resource person, who will help draw a livelihood plan and connect you to the block mission office. Confirm exact loan and subsidy terms with your SRLM as they vary by state.
I became a Lakhpati Didi through dairy. Our SHG took a loan, I bought two buffaloes and added one more later. With milk sold daily to the cooperative I now cross one lakh easily in a year. The trick is keeping costs low by growing my own green fodder. Talk to your group leader first, do not skip the SHG.
For me it was pickle and papad making with three other women. Training came from the block mission free of cost. We did not earn one lakh in the first year, it took almost two years to build customers in nearby town markets. Be patient and keep simple accounts of every sale.
