If you use a rotavator only 15 to 20 days a year on a small farm, hiring is usually cheaper than owning. A rotavator is a sizeable investment plus you carry maintenance, blade replacement and storage. Renting through a custom hiring centre or a neighbour lets you pay only for use. Buy it only if you have enough acreage to use it many days each season, or you can earn back the cost by doing custom work for others. Match the rotavator width to your tractor PTO HP (roughly 1.5 to 2 HP per foot) so the implement is not underpowered.

I have 4 acres and just hire a rotavator from the village custom hiring centre. Buying made no sense for a few days of use. The rental rate per acre is reasonable here.

I bought one only because I do custom work for ten nearby farmers. That income pays the blades and diesel. If you will not rent it out, owning a rotavator for a small farm is a loss.

One caution if you do decide to buy: blade wear is a real running cost and a full set replacement is not cheap, so budget for it. The rate depends on the make and your local market, so ask the dealer what a blade set costs before you commit.
