For a small farmer the best cash crop is one that gives high value from a small area, sells locally, and does not need huge upfront money, so vegetables, spices and select horticulture usually beat big field crops. On small land, vegetables such as okra, chilli, tomato, brinjal, cauliflower or leafy greens can give returns ranging from around 40 thousand to over a lakh per acre per cycle, though prices swing widely. Spices and condiments like ginger, turmeric or coriander, and a small fruit plot of banana, papaya or guava, can also work well where there is demand. The catch with cash crops is that they need more attention, water, and a reliable buyer, and the price you get can change a lot between seasons. So do not put your whole small holding into one cash crop, keep a part in a safer food crop for the family and to cover risk. Pick the cash crop your local mandi actually pays well for, and confirm current prices and a likely return range with your KVK and nearest market before sowing.

On my small plot okra and chilli have been steady earners because the local sabzi market buys them daily. Banana also paid me well but it ties up the land for almost a year, so think about that.

I do off season vegetables when supply is low and price is high. That timing matters more than the crop name. Same tomato gives double money if you have it when others do not.
