Inspect the engine, transmission, hydraulics, tyres and papers before paying. Start the engine cold; it should fire without hard cranking, run without heavy black or white smoke, and have no knocking or rattling. Test every gear for smooth shifting, check the clutch and brakes on a test drive, and confirm the hydraulics lift and hold without dropping. Look for oil leaks, fresh welding (hidden accident repairs) and tyre cracks or bulges. On paper, verify the registration certificate, original invoice, insurance, tax receipts and chassis number matching the records. Prefer a brand with good local service and spares. If possible bring a trusted mechanic and check engine hours run.

Always do a cold start test. Sellers often warm up the engine before you arrive to hide starting problems. I caught a smoky engine that way and walked off the deal.

Check the RC and that the chassis number matches. I almost bought one with mismatched papers, would have been stuck at the RTO transfer. Get a mechanic to check the hydraulic lift too.
