My card marks organic carbon as low. I know it means my soil is weak, but what are the actual practical things I can do over the next year or two to raise it?
Low organic carbon means your soil is short on organic matter, so it holds less water and nutrients and its biological life is weak. The good news is you can rebuild it, but it is gradual, expect change over two to three years, not one season. The main levers are these. Add well-rotted farmyard manure or compost every year, this is the most direct fix. Grow a green manure crop like dhaincha or sunhemp in the gap before your main crop and plough it in. Do not burn crop residue, instead incorporate stubble and straw back into the soil or compost it. Bring legumes into your rotation, pulses leave the soil richer. Use vermicompost and any local organic material you have, and reduce excessive tillage that burns up organic matter. Mulching also helps in many crops. Combine these with balanced fertiliser as per the card rather than only chemical fertiliser year after year. Keep adding organic matter steadily and retest after two to three years to see the rise. Ask your KVK which green manure and how much manure suits your soil and crop.
Dhaincha before kharif made a real difference for me. Sowed it, let it grow, ploughed it in green. After two years my next card showed organic carbon a notch better.
I stopped burning my residue and started mixing it back with the rotavator. Slow change but the soil feels softer now and holds water longer.
