When canal water comes only on your warabandi turn, the key is to capture and use it efficiently and not waste any during your slot. Level your field, ideally with laser levelling, so water spreads evenly and reaches the far end without runoff, and use proper field channels or pipes to cut conveyance loss. Irrigate at the most critical growth stages of the crop rather than every turn, and store surplus canal water in a farm pond or tank to use through drip or sprinkler between turns. Lined field channels, bunding and timely land preparation help the water soak in where needed. Match crop and sowing so peak water demand lines up with assured canal supply. This stretches limited canal water much further.

Laser levelling was the biggest help. Earlier half my field stayed dry on one turn, now the whole field wets in the same time and water.

I store my canal turn water in a small pond and run drip on vegetables between turns. Otherwise the water just sits and seeps away.

We lined the kachha field channel with the panchayat. So much water used to soak into the long mud channel before reaching the field. After lining, more of the turn actually reaches the crop.

Be ready before your turn comes. The slot is fixed, so prepare the field, clean the channels and decide which plot to water first. The hours I wasted setting up the first time, the water just ran off the tail end.
