Growing some medicinal crops but struggling to sell. Want to know about buyers, mandis and contract farming.

For medicinal and aromatic plants the market, not the growing, is usually the hard part, so finding buyers should be settled before you plant. The main buyers are ayurvedic, herbal, cosmetic and pharma manufacturers, processing units, and traders at established medicinal plant mandis such as the well known herbal markets in the Neemuch and Mandsaur belt of Madhya Pradesh and other regional hubs. Contract or buyback farming with a genuine company gives the most secure sale, but get specifications, quality norms and rates in writing and verify the company is real. The National Medicinal Plants Board and your state horticulture department promote cultivation and can point you to grower groups and buyer linkages, and selling through an FPO improves your bargaining power. Be very wary of agents who sell costly planting material with promised buyback and then disappear. Confirm a real buyer, dried product quality standards and current rates before scaling any medicinal crop.

My biggest mistake was growing first and looking for buyers later. Now I fix the buyer before planting. The medicinal mandis in MP take many herbs. An FPO helped us sell together for a better rate than going alone to a trader.

Contract farming can be good but only with a genuine company and a written agreement on rate and quality. Many sweet talking agents cheated farmers near us with fake buyback. Check the buyer is real, ask other growers, and dry your produce properly for the best price.
