Mentha, or menthol mint, is a major cash crop in Uttar Pradesh, with Barabanki, Rampur, Badaun and nearby districts forming the country's mint oil heartland. It is a short duration crop, typically planted around early in the year and harvested in summer, after which the herbage is distilled on farm or at a local unit to extract menthol mint oil. Oil yield is commonly in the range of roughly 60 to 100 kg or more per hectare with good management. Profit depends heavily on the mint oil rate, which fluctuates a lot year to year, so income can be very good in a high price year and thin in a low one. Costs include planting material, heavy irrigation, fertiliser and distillation. Buyers are mint oil traders, processors and the menthol and flavour industry. Do not bank on past peak oil prices; check current rates, and consider distillation tie ups before planting.

Mentha is the main cash crop here in Barabanki. The catch is the oil price, it goes up and down a lot. Some years we make very good money, some years just okay. It needs a lot of water and timely irrigation for good oil yield.

Distillation matters. Either you own a small unit or you share one with neighbours. A late or poor distillation reduces oil recovery. Store the oil and sell when the rate is good if you can hold it.

Water is the hidden cost people forget. Mentha is thirsty and if your tubewell or canal supply is weak, oil yield drops fast in the summer heat. Factor your irrigation reliability before deciding the area, that decided my profit more than the oil rate some years.
