Kodo and little millet are extremely hardy small millets traditionally grown in tribal and tribal adjacent dryland areas of central India with minimal inputs. Sow with the monsoon onset at a seed rate of about 4 to 5 kg per acre, broadcast or line sown, on poor and marginal soils where other crops fail. They need very little fertiliser and tolerate drought and low fertility well. Use clean seed and improved varieties where available to lift yields above traditional landraces. Demand and prices have improved under the millet mission and tribal millet programmes, and these grains store well for long periods. For kodo, ensure proper drying and storage to avoid quality issues. Confirm improved variety availability and procurement support with your KVK or tribal development office.

In Dindori kodo and kutki are our old crops. They grow where nothing else will. Now after the millet promotion buyers come for them and the rate is better than before.

These millets need almost no spray or fertiliser, which suits us. The main thing is good drying and storage so they keep for the year and fetch a fair price.

One caution on kodo, if the grain gets damp or is harvested wet and stored badly it can sometimes cause sickness when eaten. Our elders always dried it fully in the sun and stored it dry. Take this seriously and keep it bone dry, and ask your KVK if you are unsure.
