For grain maize a common recommendation is row to row spacing of about 60 cm and plant to plant spacing of about 20 to 22 cm, giving a population of roughly 27,000 to 30,000 plants per acre. Seed rate is about 8 kg per acre for medium and full season hybrids, a bit more for sweet corn or higher density planting. Maintaining the right population is one of the biggest drivers of maize yield, so do not sow too thin. Sow at a depth of about 4 to 5 cm into moist soil and gap fill early if germination is patchy. In Chhindwara I keep 60 by 20 cm and use a seed drill. Earlier I sowed thicker thinking more plants means more yield, but it gave thin cobs. Correct population gave better cobs.

Good plant stand matters most. I gap fill within a week where seeds did not come up. A ridge and furrow layout also helps drainage in heavy rain here.
