For Karnataka, popular high yielding finger millet varieties include the GPU series such as GPU 28, GPU 48 and GPU 67, and ML series like ML 365, which are widely grown across the southern dry and transition zones. GPU 28 is a well known medium duration blast tolerant variety popular with rainfed ragi growers. Choose duration to match your rainfall, early types for short rainfall windows and medium types where rain is more assured. Use certified seed and treat against blast. Confirm the variety notified and recommended for your taluka with your local KVK or the state agriculture department, since recommendations are updated and new releases come in regularly.

In Tumakuru most of us grow GPU 28. Good yield, stands the dry spells well and the blast pressure is lower than old local types. The grain is good for ragi mudde and malt.

I tried ML 365 and got nice fingers in a good rain year. For a short monsoon I switch to an early variety so the crop finishes in time.

Blast disease is the big worry with ragi, so pick a tolerant variety like the GPU types and still treat the seed. The old local seed I used earlier got neck blast badly in a wet year and the fingers were empty. A tolerant variety saved me that loss.

Buy fresh certified seed from the raitha samparka kendra rather than saving very old grain as seed. My germination improved and the crop was more even. They also tell you which variety is doing well that season.

Across the border in Andhra dry areas we also grow GPU 28 and it adjusts well. Just remember an early variety in a low rain year and a medium one when rain is good. Matching duration to rainfall matters more than the exact name.

If you sell to the procurement centre, ask which varieties they accept well, very dark or odd coloured grain sometimes gets a lower grade. The common GPU varieties give the standard brown grain buyers expect for mudde and flour.
