Ragi or finger millet is a hardy, nutritious cereal grown mainly in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and the hills of Uttarakhand, both by transplanting and direct sowing. It gives a good response to modest, balanced fertiliser and to organic manure, and it is often grown with low inputs by small farmers. Nitrogen is split between basal and one or two top-dressings, while phosphorus and potash go in at sowing or transplanting. Irrigated ragi takes more fertiliser than rainfed. ICAR and State Agricultural Universities give a clear N:P:K range for irrigated and rainfed conditions. Recommended NPK dose for Ragi (Finger Millet)
A common ICAR range for irrigated ragi is about 50 to 60 kg N, 30 kg P2O5 and 30 kg K2O per hectare, which is roughly 20 to 24 kg N, 12 kg P2O5 and 12 kg K2O per acre. Rainfed ragi needs less, around 40 kg N, 20 kg P2O5 and 20 kg K2O per hectare. In fertiliser terms an irrigated dose per hectare is about 65 kg DAP plus 90 to 110 kg urea plus 50 kg MOP, or per acre about 26 kg DAP plus 36 to 45 kg urea plus 20 kg MOP. Reduce urea where DAP supplies part of the nitrogen. These are general ranges only. Always adjust to your Soil Health Card or a fresh soil test and confirm with your local KVK.
Application schedule
Apply full phosphorus, full potash and about half the nitrogen as basal at sowing or transplanting. Give the remaining nitrogen in one or two top-dressings: a common practice is to split it equally at about 25 to 30 days and about 45 days after sowing or transplanting. In a simple no-soil-test practice, some universities suggest a basal of DAP at sowing and a urea top-dressing about three weeks later. Time each top-dressing with adequate moisture so the nitrogen dissolves and reaches the roots.
Organic & bio-fertilizers
Mix 5 to 10 tonnes of well-rotted farmyard manure or compost per hectare into the soil before sowing or transplanting, about 2 to 4 tonnes per acre. Ragi responds especially well to organic manure and is well suited to organic and natural farming. Vermicompost at 1.5 to 2.5 tonnes per hectare is a good alternative. Treat seed or seedling roots with Azospirillum and PSB biofertilisers to add nitrogen and free up phosphorus. Growing ragi with a pulse and returning residue steadily build soil fertility, which suits the low-input way this crop is usually grown.
Micronutrients & deficiency signs
Ragi is fairly tolerant but can show micronutrient shortages on poor and degraded soils. Zinc deficiency appears as yellowing between veins and small spots on middle leaves with stunted plants; where the soil test confirms it, apply about 20 to 25 kg zinc sulphate per hectare at sowing or transplanting, roughly 8 to 10 kg per acre. Iron deficiency, seen as yellow new leaves with green veins, occurs on alkaline and hill soils and is best corrected by a foliar spray. Sulphur from gypsum or single super phosphate helps on very light soils.
Tips & cautions
Make the most of organic manure, since ragi responds strongly to farmyard manure and suits low-input and organic farming. Split nitrogen into a basal and one or two top-dressings timed with moisture. Prefer neem-coated urea for better efficiency. Do not overuse urea, as excess makes plants leafy and prone to lodging and blast, and wastes money on a crop that needs only a modest dose. Combine biofertilisers with organic manure to cut chemical fertiliser, and always follow your Soil Health Card.
