In Maharashtra kharif jowar is generally sown with the onset of the monsoon from mid June to mid July, while rabi jowar in the famous Marathwada and western Maharashtra tracts is sown from mid September to mid October on conserved soil moisture. Rabi jowar grown on deep black cotton soil gives the prized grain and fodder and relies almost entirely on stored moisture, so timely sowing after the last good rain is critical. For kharif, do not sow too early before the monsoon settles or shoot fly attack worsens. Use a seed rate of about 3 to 4 kg per acre and choose a duration that matches your rainfall pattern. Confirm exact dates with your local agriculture office for your taluka.

In Latur we sow rabi jowar in the Dasara period on the black soil after the September rains stop. That stored moisture carries the crop. Maldandi type gives the best bhakri quality grain here.

For kharif I wait till the monsoon is properly set, sowing dry too early always brought heavy shoot fly damage for me. Late June sowing gave a cleaner crop.

If your rabi sowing gets delayed past mid October the yield drops because the moisture in the soil keeps going down each day. I try to finish sowing as soon as the field is workable after the last rain rather than waiting for a perfect day.
