Yellow leaf disease is a serious phytoplasma disorder of arecanut spread by insect vectors, causing progressive yellowing of leaves, reduced nut size and yield, and eventual decline of the palm, and it has no outright cure. Management is about slowing it and keeping palms healthy, so apply adequate organic manure and balanced fertiliser, correct soil acidity with lime where needed, ensure good drainage, and irrigate properly. Remove severely declined unproductive palms that act as disease sources. Avoid moving suckers or seedlings from affected gardens. Control of vectors and use of healthy planting material help limit spread. Consult the plantation crops research institute and your horticulture department for the current advisory, as research on this disease is ongoing.

There is no medicine that cures it, sadly. Keeping the palms well fed and the soil limed slowed it in my garden so they kept yielding longer. Healthy palms hold on better.

Do not bring seedlings from an affected garden, that is how it spreads to clean areas. I removed the worst declining palms so they stopped being a source for the rest. Get expert advice from the research station.

First make sure it is really yellow leaf disease and not just nutrient deficiency or root grub damage, which can also yellow the leaves. A soil and palm check by the horticulture officer saved me from panicking, mine turned out to be a magnesium and drainage issue I could actually fix.

In the badly affected Shivamogga and Sagar pockets some growers are slowly mixing in other crops so they are not fully dependent on areca if a garden declines. It is a hard call but worth thinking about if your area has heavy disease pressure. Take the research station advisory seriously.
