Mangala is a well proven arecanut variety for coastal Karnataka, early bearing, more female flowers, good nut set and shorter in height for easier harvest, with a good chali yield per palm. Sumangala, Sreemangala and Mohitnagar are other good options, and dwarf types like Hirehalli dwarf suit some growers. Plant in pits of about 90 cm cube at a spacing of around 2.7 m by 2.7 m, giving roughly 500 to 600 palms per acre. Use seedlings raised from healthy mother palms. Arecanut needs good drainage, partial shade in early years, and you can grow it with pepper, cocoa or banana as intercrops for extra income. Confirm currently recommended varieties with the plantation crops institute or your horticulture department.

Mangala is popular here in DK, comes to bearing earlier and is not too tall so harvesting is easier. Choose seedlings from a high yielding healthy mother palm, that decides your garden for decades.

Intercrop with pepper and banana, the supari garden gives shade and you earn from the same land. My pepper on areca trunks adds good income while the palms are young and even after.

One thing to think about before planting a big new garden, arecanut prices swing a lot and harvesting and processing labour is getting hard to find on the coast. A dwarf type that is easier to climb and pick saved me on labour. Plan for the long term, the garden ties up your land for many years.
