A bearing coconut palm needs a balanced annual dose of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium along with organic manure, applied in split doses, generally one part at the start of the southwest monsoon and another at the northeast monsoon when soil moisture is good. As a guide, apply farmyard manure or compost plus around 500 g N, 320 g P2O5 and 1200 g K2O per palm per year for bearing palms, but follow your state recommendation and soil test. Coconut responds strongly to potassium and to magnesium and boron in deficient soils. Irrigate every 4 to 7 days in summer in drained basins, drip is very efficient and saves water. Mulch the basin and grow a cover crop to conserve moisture.
Drip irrigation transformed my garden in Tumkur, the nut size and number went up and I use far less water than basin flooding. Coconut really loves steady moisture in summer.
Do not forget potash, coconut needs a lot of it. I also add some salt and magnesium based on soil test and the buttons hold better. Split the dose with the monsoons so it is not washed away.
Get a soil test before fixing your dose, our soils differ a lot even within Tumkur district. My neighbour over applied potash blindly and wasted money, while my coastal cousin needed extra magnesium that I do not. The book figure is a starting point, not a fixed rule.
Mulching the basin with husks and coconut leaves held moisture so well that my summer watering gap stretched out. The old fronds and husks rot down and feed the palm too. Cheap and effective in a dry year.
Intercropping cocoa and banana in my coconut garden gave extra income and the shade and shared irrigation suited all three. Just feed each crop separately, do not let the intercrop starve the palms of water and nutrients.
