For seed fenugreek, varieties such as RMt 1, RMt 143, Hisar Sonali, Pusa Early Bunching and Gujarat Methi types are widely grown, choose one notified for your area. Sow in rabi, from late October to first week of November in north India, using about 8 to 10 kg seed per acre in lines about 20 to 25 cm apart. Fenugreek is a cool season crop and likes well drained loam. Treat seed with a fungicide and inoculate with rhizobium where available since it is a legume and fixes nitrogen. Watch for powdery mildew and downy mildew, spraying wettable sulphur or mancozeb based fungicide as needed. Harvest when pods turn yellow and seeds harden. Confirm current notified varieties with your KVK.

Being a legume, methi needs less nitrogen so I cut down urea and the crop still did fine. Saved input cost. Just give it good phosphorus and it sets pods well.

Powdery mildew hit my methi late in the season. A sulphur spray controlled it. Keep the rows not too crowded so air moves through, that reduced disease for me.

Kasuri methi is a different type grown more for the aromatic leaf than for big seed yield, so do not pick it if your aim is a heavy seed crop. I keep a small patch of Kasuri for home and the regular seed types for the market.
