Crop rotation means growing different crops in sequence on the same field instead of the same crop every season, which restores fertility and breaks pest and disease cycles. Alternate deep-rooted and shallow-rooted crops and include a legume (pulse) that fixes nitrogen, for example cereal then pulse then oilseed. This reduces buildup of crop-specific pests, weeds, and diseases, improves soil structure and organic matter, and balances nutrient use because different crops draw different nutrients. Plan rotations around your soil, water, market, and labour, and avoid following a crop with a close relative that shares the same pests. Combined with green manure and residue management, rotation steadily lowers your input cost.
