What is bird perch (T-perch) and does it help pest control?

A bird perch, often called a T perch, is simply a T shaped wooden or bamboo stick fixed in the field so insect eating birds like drongos, mynas and shrikes have a place to sit and watch for prey. From the perch they swoop down and pick up caterpillars, grubs and grasshoppers. It costs almost nothing, just a few sticks, and you put up around 8 to 10 perches per acre spread across the field, then remove or lower them later if a tall crop or grain stage would attract grain eating birds. This is a genuine low cost help against caterpillar and beetle pests, the birds do real work for free. Be honest about the scale though, perches reduce pest numbers and support your other methods, they will not clear a sudden heavy outbreak by themselves. They fit best in field crops like pulses, cotton and oilseeds as one part of an overall IPM plan along with traps and biopesticides. It is one of the easiest organic tools any farmer can try.
