PGS-India (Participatory Guarantee System) is a low-cost, group-based certification for the domestic market where local farmers peer-verify each other through field inspections and records. To get it, form or join a local group of at least 5 farmers, register on the PGS-India portal (under the National Centre of Organic and Natural Farming), follow organic standards, maintain field diaries, and undergo peer appraisal during the conversion period. Once compliant, the group earns PGS-India Green (and later Organic) certification, allowing use of the Jaivik Bharat logo for domestic sales. It is nearly free compared with third-party certification. Individual farmers or groups smaller than 5 are not covered and must join a group or opt for NPOP third-party certification.

Forming the group of five was the slow part for us. Once we had willing neighbours and a local resource person to guide the paperwork, the registration and peer appraisal moved along fine.
