Many machinery and irrigation subsidies use a lottery because the number of applications is far higher than the funds available for that year, so a computerised draw picks beneficiaries fairly. This is common on portals like MahaDBT for tractors, implements and drip. Important rules: do not buy the machine before you get the approval or sanction letter, since a pre-purchase can disqualify your claim, and keep your application complete with correct land, bank and Aadhaar details so it is not rejected. If you are not selected, your application often carries forward or you can reapply next cycle. Priority categories like women, SC, ST and small farmers may get better odds.

Being picked in the lottery is only the first gate. After that your documents are verified, so an incomplete or mismatched file can still drop you even after selection. Get everything clean before the draw, not after, so you do not waste the chance.

If you keep missing the draw, applying in a priority category where you genuinely qualify, women, SC, ST or small and marginal, can improve your odds since some funds are earmarked for them. My wife applied in her name as a woman farmer and we got selected the next cycle.

Do not pay any agent who promises to fix the lottery, it is a computer draw and nobody can guarantee selection. People lose money to such middlemen every season. Apply yourself or through a genuine service centre and just keep reapplying if not selected.

Check whether your state carries forward unselected applications or needs a fresh one each cycle, it varies. In some portals you simply wait in the queue, in others you must reapply when the window reopens. I missed a year assuming mine had carried forward when it had not.
