Agricultural electricity connection subsidy and free power for farm pumps in India.

Agricultural power tariffs are heavily subsidised and several states give free or near-free electricity for farm pumps, but the exact benefit is decided by each state, not the centre. Some states supply free power up to a sanctioned horsepower, others charge a low flat rate per HP or per unit, and many run schemes to clear pending farm connection applications. To get a new connection, apply to your state DISCOM with land records, Aadhaar, the pump details and a wiring or test report, then pay the connection charges, which may also be subsidised for SC and ST farmers. Where supply is poor, a PM-KUSUM solar pump is a strong alternative. Check your DISCOM for the current farm tariff and connection scheme.
In our state farm power is a flat charge per HP and the supply is mostly at night. Many of us shifted to solar pumps so we can irrigate in the daytime without depending on the grid hours.
If your connection application has been pending for years, ask the DISCOM whether a scheme to clear the old farm connection backlog is running. A drive in our area finally released connections that had been stuck. Keep your file number and follow up at the sub-division office.
