I want to take a loan under the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund for a post-harvest project but I am not sure where to even start. Online portal or bank first?

The Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF) is a central scheme that gives medium and long term loans for post-harvest and farm-gate infrastructure, with the main benefit being an interest subvention of 3 percent per year on the loan up to a ceiling, plus credit guarantee cover for eligible loans. The usual path is this. First, decide your project clearly, for example a warehouse, cold store, sorting and grading unit, or primary processing, and prepare a simple project report with cost estimate. Second, register on the official AIF portal run under the agriinfra programme and fill your application with project details and the bank you want to borrow from. Third, the application is forwarded to your chosen lending bank, which appraises it like a normal term loan, checks your project viability, margin money and collateral position. Fourth, once the bank sanctions, the interest subvention and credit guarantee are linked to that loan through the portal. So in practice you work on two tracks at once, the portal application and the bank loan appraisal. Many farmers do this through their existing bank branch, a cooperative bank, an FPO promoting agency or NABARD-supported channel. Keep a clean project report, land or lease papers, quotations for equipment and your KYC ready. Because portal steps, the subvention ceiling and timelines do get updated, confirm the current process and terms on the official AIF agriinfra portal or directly with your lending bank before you commit money. This is general information and not financial advice.
I did exactly this for a small godown. The portal part is quick, the real wait is the bank appraisal. Keep your project report neat and they move faster.
My bank manager had not handled an AIF case before, so I had to print the scheme guidelines and show him. Worth checking if your branch knows the scheme first.
Doing the portal application and the bank file at the same time saved me weeks. If you wait for one to finish before starting the other, it drags.
I went through my FPO's promoting agency and they handled most of the portal and bank coordination. Much less running around than doing it alone.
