PM-KUSUM has three parts. Component A helps farmers set up small ground-mounted solar plants up to 2 MW on barren or fallow land and sell power to the DISCOM. Component B gives subsidy to install standalone off-grid solar pumps up to 7.5 HP where there is no grid supply, with about 30 percent central plus 30 percent state assistance. Component C solarises existing grid-connected pumps so the farmer uses solar by day and can sell surplus power. Most individual farmers needing a new pump use Component B, while those with an existing electric pump look at Component C. Apply through your state portal.
Simple way to remember it: A is for selling power from a solar plant on spare land, B is a fresh off-grid pump where there is no electricity line, and C is adding solar to a pump that already runs on the grid. Pick by what you have on your field today.
Component C itself has two flavours in many states, individual pump solarisation and a feeder-level option where the whole farm feeder is solarised by the DISCOM. Not every state runs both, so ask your DISCOM which one is open before you assume you can solarise just your own pump.
