Niger (ramtil) is a low yielding oilseed, giving only a small quintal yield per acre, but it grows on poor land with almost no inputs where other crops fail, so it remains valuable for tribal and upland farmers. Niger has an MSP, and there is steady demand from oil mills and the bird feed market, where niger seed is widely used. Prices are modest but the crop costs little. It also supports honey production through its flowers. For marginal hill land it is a low risk traditional crop rather than a high income one. Check the current niger MSP and local mandi or tribal cooperative rate, and ask your KVK for realistic yields before deciding.

Ramtil gives little but costs almost nothing, so it still pays on poor land. The bird feed and oil demand keeps a buyer for it. Our cooperative procures some at the support rate.
