Niger (ramtil) is a low yielding oilseed, giving only a small quintal yield per acre, but it grows on poor land with almost no inputs where other crops fail, so it remains valuable for tribal and upland farmers. Niger has an MSP, and there is steady demand from oil mills and the bird feed market, where niger seed is widely used. Prices are modest but the crop costs little. It also supports honey production through its flowers. For marginal hill land it is a low risk traditional crop rather than a high income one.
