Cowpea (lobia) is a warm season crop sown both in the kharif monsoon from June to July and as a summer crop from February to March where water is available. Choose your type by purpose: bushy or semi spreading vegetable pod types for green pods to sell fresh, grain types for dry lobia seed, and dual or fodder types if you also want green fodder for animals. Treat seed with Rhizobium for good nodulation, which adds nitrogen to the soil. Cowpea is quick and hardy, making it a good catch crop, green manure or intercrop. Confirm the recommended variety and exact sowing window for your purpose and area with your KVK or the local agriculture office.

Decide first whether you want green pods to sell, dry grain or fodder, because the variety is different. I grow the vegetable pod type for the local market in summer, it sells well and is quick.

Lobia is great as a quick intercrop and green manure too. Rhizobium treatment is cheap and the soil is better for the next crop. It handles heat better than many pulses.
