The most common failures are: power or pump failure cutting off the nutrient flow, which in NFT can damage roots within hours; poor water quality used without treatment, so salts and pH problems build up; wrong or unmanaged EC and pH leading to nutrient lockout or deficiency; root rot and waterborne disease like pythium spreading through the recirculating solution; algae and clogging in channels and emitters; and heat stress when the structure is not cooled properly. Underneath most of these is the same root cause, the grower did not have the training to monitor and react daily. There is also the business failure, growing well but having no buyer for premium produce. The system is unforgiving because there is no soil to buffer mistakes. Protect yourself with reliable power backup, treated water, daily EC and pH checks, strict hygiene, and a confirmed market. Learn from a working farm first, and keep your KVK or a mentor grower on call for the early months.

Lost a whole batch to root rot in my first summer. Water was too warm and I had no idea about cooling the solution. Painful lesson, get this right early.

Power went for six hours one night, pump off, half my NFT crop wilted. Now I have a backup. Do not skip the inverter or generator.

My failure was the business side, not the system. I grew beautiful lettuce and then had no steady buyer, sold it cheap and lost money. The market is as much a failure point as root rot.
