Under Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) the farmer pays a very small share of the premium: a maximum of 2% of the sum insured for Kharif (monsoon) crops, 1.5% for Rabi (winter) crops, and 5% for commercial and horticultural crops. The rest of the actual premium is paid by the central and state governments as subsidy. For example, on a paddy policy with Rs 50000 sum insured per hectare, your share at 2% is about Rs 1000. The scheme is voluntary for all farmers. To enrol, apply through your bank, CSC, or the National Crop Insurance Portal at pmfby.gov.in before the cut-off date, with Aadhaar, land records, bank details and sowing certificate.
Maine apni soyabean ke liye 2% premium diya tha kharif me. Bank wale ne loan ke saath hi bima kaat liya. Sum insured pe percentage lagta hai, fasal ke hisaab se.
Remember the percentage is on the sum insured, not on your expected harvest value. So if your sum insured per hectare is higher, your rupee premium is higher too even at the same 2%. Ask the bank to show you the sum insured figure for your crop before you sign.
For commercial crops like cotton my share was 5%, much higher than my friend's paddy at 2%. So the crop type really decides what you pay. Check your crop's category before assuming it is cheap.
