I keep seeing oats sold as a health breakfast. Can oats be grown in India as a crop and when?

Oats are grown in India mainly as a rabi or winter season crop in the cooler months, and the bulk of the area is grown as a fodder crop for animals rather than as a food grain. It suits the cool weather of the northern plains and is grown in states like Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, parts of Maharashtra and the hills. It likes cool growing conditions and well drained soils and dislikes heat at grain filling. The important honest point is that the rolled oats and breakfast oats you see in shops are usually a specific food grade oat that is hulled and processed, and India still imports a large share of food oats, while most domestically grown oat is fodder. So if your goal is the breakfast market you need food grade oat varieties and processing, which is a niche. Confirm fodder versus grain varieties and the right window with your KVK.

In Punjab most oat is grown as winter green fodder for the dairy animals. The eating oats in the packet are a different processed thing.
