Drip irrigation with fertigation is now standard for commercial fruit orchards because it saves water, delivers nutrients directly to the root zone, and improves yield and quality. Design the system around your crop spacing and soil: use one or more drippers per plant sized to the tree's age and water need, install a filtration unit since clogging is the biggest practical problem, and add a venturi or fertilizer tank for fertigation. Apply water-soluble fertilizers in small, frequent split doses matched to the crop's growth stage rather than heavy single doses, and flush the lines regularly. Schedule irrigation by crop stage, weather, and soil moisture. Drip and fertigation systems are eligible for subsidy under MIDH and PMKSY per drop more crop; confirm components and the design with your state horticulture department.
The filter is not optional. I skimped on filtration at first and spent the season unclogging drippers. A proper screen or sand filter, sized for my water, and a regular flush schedule saved me endless trouble afterwards. Dirty water will ruin a good system fast.
Frequent small fertigation doses gave me far better results than the old habit of dumping fertiliser a few times a season. The roots get a steady supply and less is wasted below the root zone. Match it to the growth stage as the horticulture office advises.
