Thinking of button mushroom as a small business. Is it actually profitable for someone new, and who buys the fresh mushrooms?

Button mushroom can be profitable but it is not easy money for a complete beginner, because it needs cool temperature, clean compost and steady buyers. Fresh button mushroom has good demand in cities, hotels, restaurants, caterers, vegetable mandis and some retail and food processing units, but it is highly perishable and prices swing with season and supply, so a market tie up before you grow is essential. Many beginners do well by starting small and seasonal in winter with bought compost, learning the crop, then scaling. Profit depends heavily on your yield, your selling rate and whether you control temperature, so I would avoid quoting a fixed income figure. The honest advice is to first sell out one small crop reliably and learn your real costs and rates locally before borrowing to expand. Talk to your KVK and to existing growers and buyers in your district to gauge real demand and prices.
Selling is the hard part, not growing. I fixed two hotels and one vegetable vendor before my first crop. Mushrooms spoil in a day or two so you must sell fast or chill.
Winter button season is short in the plains. I added oyster mushroom for the rest of the year so my unit is not idle. Helped my overall income a lot.
