Almond is climate restricted and grows commercially mainly in the cold temperate hills, especially parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and some Himachal Pradesh pockets, not in the warm plains. It needs winter chilling to flower and fruit properly, and it flowers early in spring, which makes it vulnerable to late frost that can wipe out the crop in a bad year. In the plains and warm areas almond simply does not set commercial nuts. If you are in a suitable cold hill region, plant grafted improved varieties and choose a site with good air drainage to reduce frost risk, and arrange cross pollination. Be cautious of anyone selling almond plants for the plains with income promises.
