Fruit fly is the worst pest of bitter gourd and other cucurbits, laying eggs in young fruit so maggots rot it from inside. Sanitation is the foundation; collect and deep bury or destroy all fallen and infested fruits to break the breeding cycle, never leave them in the field. Install cue lure or methyl eugenol based traps to catch male flies, about several per acre, and use protein bait splash sprays where recommended. Bagging individual young fruits with paper or net is very effective on small areas. Train vines on a trellis so fruits hang clean and are easier to monitor. Avoid blanket cover sprays which harm pollinators; use need based control. Confirm the recommended lure and bait products with your KVK.

Bagging the small karela fruits with newspaper packets sounds slow but it saved most of my crop from fruit fly. I combine it with cue lure traps and removing all the damaged fruits every few days.

The part everyone underrates is daily removal of fallen fruit. The maggots drop to the soil and pupate, so every dropped fruit left in the field is the next wave of flies. Since I started collecting them every morning the trap catch and damage both fell.
