Is polyhouse necessary for red and yellow capsicum?

For reliable, export and retail grade coloured capsicum, a polyhouse or net house is usually preferred because it protects the long-duration fruit from heat, rain and sunscald and gives cleaner, blemish-free skin that premium buyers demand. You can grow coloured capsicum in the open field in cool dry weather and in hill areas, but open field fruit is more exposed to sunscald, thrips and virus and may not reach top grade. Many serious growers use protected cultivation specifically because the price premium for clean coloured fruit justifies it. Polyhouse subsidy may be available, so check eligibility with your district horticulture office.
In Himachal hills people grow good coloured capsicum in the open in summer. Down in the plains I would not try it open field, the sun marks and thrips ruin the colour.
