Powdery mildew shows as a white powdery growth on leaves, stems and pods, usually late in the season in dry warm spells, and it can sharply cut yield and pod quality. The best defence is sowing a resistant or tolerant variety and sowing on time so the crop matures before the disease peaks. On a susceptible crop, spray wettable sulphur or a recommended fungicide at first appearance and repeat as advised, ensuring good coverage on the underside of leaves. Avoid late sowing, crowding and excess nitrogen which favour the disease. Remove and destroy heavily infected plant debris after harvest. Choose newer powdery mildew resistant pea varieties from your state university list and confirm the current recommended fungicide and dose with your KVK.

Timely sowing did more for me than any spray. The late sown crop always caught powdery mildew badly because the warm dry spell hit it at pod filling. Once I shifted my sowing earlier, the crop matured before the disease could build up.

If you do use wettable sulphur, avoid spraying it in the peak heat of the day or it can scorch the leaves. I spray in the cooler morning or evening and cover the undersides well. Follow the label dose and waiting period before picking.
