Peas are a cool season rabi crop and timely sowing is the key to yield. In the UP plains, sow from about mid October to November once temperatures fall; sowing too early in heat causes poor germination and disease, and too late shortens the pod filling window. Sow at about 30 cm between rows for dwarf types and 45 cm for tall types, with seeds 5 to 7 cm apart. Treat seed with Rhizobium culture for better nodulation and nitrogen fixation, plus a fungicide against seed and soil borne disease. Give a light irrigation if soil is dry. Early picking varieties give quick market peas while main season types yield more. Confirm the recommended variety and exact seed rate with your district agriculture office.
In Kanpur I always wait for the weather to cool before sowing matar. The years I sowed early in warm days, germination was patchy and powdery mildew came fast. November sowing has been most reliable for me.
The Rhizobium treatment is cheap and worth it for peas. When I started inoculating the seed the plants nodulated well and I cut back on nitrogen fertiliser. Just keep the treated seed in the shade and sow it the same day, do not leave it in the sun.
If you sell early peas in the market the first lots fetch a premium. I keep a small early variety for the first picking and a main season variety for the bulk yield. That way I catch the high early price and still get good total output.
Do the fungicide seed treatment first, let it dry a little, then mix the Rhizobium just before sowing so the chemical does not kill the culture. I made the mistake of mixing both together once and the inoculation did not take. Check the label or ask your KVK for the right order.
