Transplant cabbage at about 45 by 45 cm for normal varieties and 60 by 45 cm for large heading hybrids; closer spacing gives smaller heads suited to certain markets. Apply plenty of well rotted farmyard manure at land preparation. Cabbage is a heavy feeder, especially of nitrogen and potash, so apply full phosphorus and potash and part nitrogen as basal, then top dress the remaining nitrogen in two splits, once at about 3 weeks and again at head initiation, to push head size. Maintain steady moisture as fluctuation causes head cracking. Do not over apply nitrogen late as it delays maturity and invites pests. Base the exact kg per acre on a soil test and your state university recommendation for the variety and your district.

Spacing is really a market decision. When my buyer wanted small, firm heads for retail packs I planted closer. For the loose vegetable market that pays by weight I went wider to get bigger heads. Decide who you are selling to before you set the spacing.

Head cracking caught me out after a dry spell followed by heavy irrigation. The sudden water made the heads split open and the trader rejected them. Keeping the moisture steady, especially as the heads firm up, is as important as the fertiliser.
