Airtight, also called hermetic, storage bags protect pulses and grain by sealing out air, so insects like weevils and bruchids cannot survive or multiply inside, which means you can store without chemical fumigants. The key is to store only well dried, clean grain, fill the bag, push out the air and seal it tightly so it stays airtight, and avoid opening it again and again. Keep the bags in a cool, dry, shaded place off the floor and away from rats, since rodents can chew through them. Inspect now and then for any tears. For pulses especially, which weevils attack badly, this is a clean and effective method for home and small farm storage. It does not work if the grain went in damp or already infested, so dry and clean first.
